Searching for Dogs
Use the Search → Dogs menu or the quick-search bar in the navigation header to find pedigrees. You can search by registered name, year of birth, sex, country, and more.
Dog Profile
Each dog has a public profile with photos, full pedigree (up to 10 generations), inbreeding analysis, and health / DNA / radiologic / competition records.
- COI (Coefficient of Inbreeding) is shown for 5 generations as the headline and as a strip for 4–10 generations to compare depth-dependent inbreeding. Lower is better; under 3.125% is considered low.
- The pedigree fan goes up to 10 generations with linkable ancestors. Click any ancestor to navigate to their profile.
- On the search results table, every column header is sortable — click a label to toggle ascending / descending. Use the filter form to narrow by sex, country, year-of-birth range, or hip score.
Test Mating
Test Mating lets you analyse a hypothetical pairing of two dogs before breeding. Pick a sire and a dam (via the name search) and the page computes:
- COI (Coefficient of Inbreeding) — visible to all visitors. COI tells you how inbred a particular pairing's offspring would be; it is an individual measure, not the population-level concept of genetic diversity. The generation-depth breakdown and CR (Coefficient of Relationship) are shown blurred to guests.
- ALC (Ancestor Loss Coefficient), PCI (Pedigree Completeness), Common Ancestors, Siblings, and Population statistics — requires a login.
- The generation selector (4–10 generations) and pedigree preview are visible to all but only adjustable once logged in.
Owners & Breeders
Owners and breeders have their own searchable profiles. Visit Search → Owners / Breeders to find a kennel or person.
A person profile lists their kennel name, country, and every dog they have owned or bred. Use the All owned / All bred links for complete lists.
Breed Info
The Breed Info menu offers two public references:
Submitting a Pedigree
Click Add a dog / Submit changes in the navigation. You can either add a completely new dog or suggest corrections to an existing record. All submissions are reviewed before being published.
- Choose New Dog or search for the existing dog you want to correct.
- Fill in all available information: name, date of birth, parents, registration number, health data.
- Attach proof documents (pedigree scan, stud book entry, photo) — or paste a link to a publicly accessible pedigree page from a registration body — to speed up review.
- Submit — a moderator will review and approve or contact you with questions.
Suggesting Changes
Found incorrect information on a dog's profile? Click the amber Suggest Changes button on the dog's page. Your suggestion will be queued for moderator review. Include a source or proof for faster approval.
Dog Name Format
Always use the registered name without titles or qualifiers. Titles such as CH (Champion), JCH, MJCH, VC, FTCH etc. are not part of the registered name and should be omitted.

FAQ
How long does it take for my submission to be approved?
Typically 1–7 days, depending on the moderator workload and completeness of the submitted data.
Can I add a dog from any country?
Yes. The database covers Hungarian Vizslas worldwide — wire-haired and smooth-haired.
Why can I not find my dog?
Try a shorter search — only use part of the name. Also check the name spelling against the official registration.
How do I report incorrect data?
Use the "Suggest Changes" button on the dog's page and attach a source document.
Do I need an account, and which features require a login?
Browsing, searching and viewing pedigrees are free for everyone — no account needed. A free account is required for the advanced tools, in particular the "Offspring" and "Mating analysis" tabs, and for submitting or editing data. Registration is free and unlocks full access, including the interactive generation controls in the demo.
Can I choose how many generations are shown in the test mating and COI?
Yes. Registered users can choose the number of generations (4–10) shown in a dog's pedigree and COI as well as in the test mating. Guests see a fixed depth; logging in unlocks the selector.
Where are the statistics for the most successful or most-used sires and dams?
The ranking of the most prolific sires and dams — by number of offspring — is now available on the Statistics page. A title-based "most successful" ranking may follow in a future update.
What does the "Reproductive status" field mean?
It shows whether a dog is intact or altered. For an intact male it reads "Intact" (testicles present); "Altered" means neutered or spayed and the dog can no longer be bred. Breeding suitability and breeding status are separate fields under Additional Information.
Are health results updated automatically from sources like the OFA?
No. The OFA offers no public interface and reproducing their data is not permitted, so results cannot be synced automatically. Newer results — such as eye tests — must be submitted manually by breeders or owners, and the dog's page links directly to the OFA record where available. The new tool makes this much simpler.
Why do I need to log in at all?
An account ties every submitted pedigree, correction and photo to a real person, so moderators know who to contact about a suggestion and the changelog stays meaningful. Browsing and viewing pedigrees never require it — only contributing data does.
How many pictures can I upload for a dog?
Up to 3 pictures per dog. If the limit is reached, suggest replacing an existing picture instead of adding a fourth one — extra pictures beyond that won't be added.
Why do DNA results sometimes appear or change automatically?
An automated assistant derives some DNA results from Mendelian inheritance when they are unambiguous from a dog's parents or offspring — for example, marking a puppy "Clear by pedigree" when both parents are DNA-clear. It only ever fills in a field that was empty; it never silently overwrites an existing recorded result. If the pedigree evidence contradicts an existing value, the assistant raises a pending suggestion for a moderator to review instead of changing anything itself. These bot-derived entries are logged separately from human edits, and you can always submit a correction with proof if a result looks wrong.
Can I edit a suggestion after I've submitted it?
Yes, as long as it hasn't been reviewed yet. Go back to the dog's page and click "Suggest Changes" again — the form reopens pre-filled with your pending suggestion, and saving it updates that same suggestion instead of creating a duplicate. This isn't available yet for a still-unreviewed new-dog submission; contact a moderator for those.
What happens if only part of my suggestion is accepted?
A moderator can accept some fields and reject others individually rather than the whole suggestion. You'll get an email listing exactly what was applied to the dog and what was rejected (with a reason, if one was given), and the same summary stays visible on the suggestion page afterwards.
What is the "Maintenance" page, and why does it keep showing up?
Every release briefly puts the site into maintenance mode while code, database changes and translations are updated — this usually takes just a few seconds to a minute or two. The page automatically refreshes itself every 30 seconds, so there's nothing you need to do. Since the database is under active development, this page can pop up briefly several times on some days.
Who can share a test mating, and how?
Once a sire and dam are selected, a "Share" button appears in the top right of the Test Mating page (if this feature is enabled for your account). It lets you set the link's lifetime, generation depth and which content is visible; the resulting link can be copied directly.
Why can't I copy anything or right-click on the shared page?
The shared view is read-only: copying and right-click are deliberately disabled so the data can't be casually copied or altered.
Why can't I print the shared page?
Printing is deliberately disabled for shared test matings; attempting it shows a short message instead. The data is meant to be viewed via the link only, not kept as a permanent copy.
How long is a shared link valid, and can it be ended early?
The lifetime (12, 24, 48 or 72 hours) is set by the sharing user when they create the link and can't be changed afterwards. That person can, however, end the share at any time under "My Profile" — the link stops working immediately.
Why don't I see some of the features described here?
A few documented features are still being tested and are, for now, only enabled for select users. They'll roll out to everyone gradually.
Can I submit data another way, like through Facebook or email?
Yes. The in-site forms are preferred since they're tracked and reviewed fastest, but submissions via the official Facebook Group or email to the database administrators are still accepted.
Why is there a watermark on the pictures?
To make a picture unattractive to copy and republish somewhere else. The watermark is not a claim of ownership: it says nothing about who took the picture, who the dog belongs to, or where the picture came from, and it transfers no rights to this database — the copyright stays entirely with the photographer. If you are contributing a picture and would rather not have the mark on it, simply untick "Protect with watermark" when you upload it. For a picture that is already online, ask the administrators and they will switch it off.
Who owns the pictures, and who is responsible for them?
The photographer. The Vizsla Database claims no rights in any picture shown here — pictures are contributed by owners, breeders and photographers, and the rights stay with them. The database does not verify who holds the rights to a contributed picture and takes no responsibility for what contributors upload. If a picture of yours appears here without your permission, contact us and it will be removed.
